On September 30, 2026, I joined the Ontario Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for its General Membership Meeting at U.S. Bank on North Euclid Avenue in Ontario. I was invited to speak about the City's Planning Department and the resources available to business owners navigating development and expansion.
As an Ontario Planning Commissioner, I appreciated the opportunity to help explain a process that can affect important business decisions. I delivered my remarks in both English and Spanish, with the goal of making the information accessible and useful.
Understanding the City Planning Process
For someone opening or expanding a business, questions can range from whether a proposed use is allowed at a particular location to what approvals are needed for signs or changes to a property. Knowing where to begin can make those decisions easier to navigate.
Planning staff review land use, zoning, site design, signs, and development standards. Building staff handle construction plans, building permits, and inspections. Some projects involve both departments, so understanding their responsibilities helps business owners direct questions to the appropriate team.
Getting Guidance Early
An early conversation with Planning staff can help an entrepreneur understand the requirements for a proposed business or project before making major commitments. Providing a property address and a clear description of the proposed activity gives staff a starting point for explaining the applicable rules.
The City offers an interactive zoning map, Planning FAQs, application materials, and an online portal for submitting Planning applications and checking permit or plan-check status. These resources can help business owners prepare and follow their applications through the process.
For general questions, the Ontario Planning Department can be reached at [email protected] or (909) 395-2036. Property-specific requirements should be confirmed directly with staff.
Thank You to the Chamber
I valued the questions and conversation with Chamber members. Meetings like this create opportunities to exchange information and connect business owners with the people and resources that can help them move forward.
Thank you to the Ontario Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's board, staff, and membership for the invitation and warm welcome. I appreciated the chance to share information in English and Spanish and spend time with people contributing to Ontario's business community.
